Housing Requirement

Housing Requirement

The residency requirement for incoming students is set in an effort to ensure students鈥 wellbeing and successful transition in Paris and at AUP, and to afford them a sense of community through living with their peers. We either list AUP-run residences, where we have resident advisors working for us on-site, or partner residences with whom we have a collaborative working relationship. This is to ensure that we are able to support our students to the best of our ability during their first year in Paris - an important transitional year, especially for those who are living abroad and/or leaving home for the first time.

Incoming first-year undergraduate students, visiting and degree-seeking, are required to secure housing through AUP. Students wishing to apply for a housing exemption must select that housing option in their AUP status page and must qualify based on the criteria listed in the Housing Exemption Policy listed below. 听Students can only request an exemption prior to their enrollment at AUP 鈥 exemptions are not processed mid-semester or mid-year for full-year students.

Transfer students have the opportunity to arrange housing through AUP to facilitate their transition to the university and their new journey in Paris 鈥 they will be able submit their housing registration form after the first round of assignments reserved to incoming first-year students.听Students can opt out of AUP Housing should they wish to find housing independently.

Coop and independent visiting students who have already had a college experience are not required to secure housing through AUP unless their home institution mandates it. Students who opt into AUP Housing will be able to submit their housing registration form after the first round of assignment reserved to incoming first-year students. Students can opt out of AUP Housing should they wish to find housing independently.

FULL-YEAR COMMITMENT

Full-year students (attending both Fall and Spring semesters of the 2025-2026 academic year) who secure a housing option through AUP are committing to AUP Housing for the full academic year.

Students only attending AUP for the Fall 2025 semester are committing to AUP Housing for the full semester.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN EXEMPTION

Students can apply for an exemption by following the steps below:

STEP 1: REVIEW THE EXEMPTION POLICY

Make听sure听that you have read through the exemption policy and that you qualify for an exemption from the housing requirement. We also encourage students to consider what the best housing arrangement will be for their first semester or year at the university. The exemption process best serves students who have the resources and support structures to navigate the housing market in Paris independently, and the experience to navigate the transition to college and to independent living successfully.

STEP 2:听 COMPLETE THE HOUSING SELECTION (AUP HOUSING/EXEMPTION/OPT OUT) FORM

and indicate whether you would like to register for AUP Housing, apply for an exemption from AUP Housing (first-year students) or opt out of AUP Housing (transfer students and non-first-year visiting students).

The Housing Selection (AUP Housing/Exemption/Opt-out) form is available to students who have completed payment of the confirmation deposit. Please note that it takes 24 to 48 hours for the deposit to be processed and for the AUP Status Page to be updated.

Once you have indicated on this form that you wish to apply for an exemption, the Housing Exemption form will appear on your checklist.

STEP 3: COMPLETE THE HOUSING EXEMPTION FORM

Complete the Housing Exemption form that will appear on your checklist by selecting your reason for requesting an exemption and submitting the required documentation to support your request. Each exemption criterion requires different documentation; be sure to carefully review the housing exemption policy below for the documentation required for your specific situation. All documents listed under each criterion are required for the request to be approved.

You will receive a notification from the AUP Status Page once your exemption request has been processed. The housing office (or the Academic Resource Center for medical exemptions) will follow up with you via email should any required documents be missing from your request.

Housing Exemption Policy

Housing Exemption Policy

Students may request an exemption from the first-year housing requirement based on specific criteria; the exemption policy has been designed to accommodate students who have specific needs not met by the AUP Housing offering or can demonstrate that they have the resources and support needed to find safe accommodation and transition through their first year in Paris and at AUP independently.

Exemptions must be justified by the appropriate documentation. Approved reasons for receiving a housing exemption are as follows:

  1. Students who are over 21 years of age
    1. Passport scan or ID card if over 21 years of age by the first day of orientation
  2. Students who are legally married and wish to live with their spouse
    1. Marriage license from the country of origin
  3. Students who already have French residency
    1. Proof of address in the form of a lease, quittance de loyer, or utility bill in the student鈥檚 name, dated at least six months prior to the student鈥檚 start date at AUP
  4. Students who will be living with family in Ile-de-France
    1. Proof of address in the form of a lease, quittance de loyer, or utility bill in the family member鈥檚 name dated at least three months prior to the student鈥檚 start date at AUP, and
    2. A Passport scan or ID card of the family member, and
    3. A signed letter from the family member certifying that they will be housing the student for their first year at AUP
  5. Students who have medical needs that cannot be accommodated through our housing offering
    1. Documentation requirements are outlined in our听Accessibility and Accommodations page
    2. Students who are granted a medical exemption can still receive assistance from the housing office in finding accommodation
  6. Students who can demonstrate an extended period (three months or more) of living independently (in housing not sponsored or managed by an educational institution) 鈥 these exemption requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
    1. A letter explaining the experience of living independently, and
    2. Documentation of the circumstances outlined by the letter (previous lease in the student鈥檚 name, enrollment in a program or university, etc鈥

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Students who have not reserved their housing or been granted an exemption will not be allowed to register for University courses, and those students who have not fulfilled their financial obligations to AUP Housing will be administratively withdrawn from classes.听
  • Students who wish to seek an exemption must select that housing option in their AUP checklists. Students who have initially elected to secure AUP housing cannot later change their housing selection to an exemption.
  • Students who are granted an exemption from housing on medical grounds are still able to access the AUP housing database, a resource which connects students with landlords who have worked with AUP in the past and are used to renting their spaces to AUP students.

Housing Requirement FAQ

When can I submit the exemption?

You will first need to choose an exemption when selecting your housing options on your AUP Status Page, at which point the exemption form will be made available to you on your status page. You will be able to submit that request and attach all necessary documentation.

What is the deadline for submitting exemptions?

We process exemption requests on a rolling basis, as students continue confirming their attendance to the university. Please note, however, that students must select the exemption option and submit their request in lieu of booking AUP Housing. Once students have elected to secure AUP Housing and submitted their preferences, they can no longer change their selection to submit an exemption.

Can I secure AUP Housing and secure an exemption for Spring?

No, the housing office does not grant mid-year exemptions. In securing housing for our incoming students, we make year-long commitments for accommodation to ensure that they are safely housed throughout their first year at AUP. As such, students who commit to AUP housing for Fall听and are planning to attend AUP for the full academic year are securing an accommodation with the university for the full year.

As an incoming student for the Spring semester, is my Spring housing reservation for the full academic year?

Students who secure AUP Housing for Spring have their housing assignment for the Spring semester only: their housing assignment does not extend for Fall. Should a student decide to return for Fall, they would be considered a returning student, and, as such, are not eligible to live in an AUP Residence. Returning students can avail of other resources, however, such as the AUP Housing Database.
